Summary of the 2010 Spring Senate
On Tuesday May 17, 2010, the Senate of RTO/ERO made two significant decisions.
The first was to approve the setting up of the RTO/ERO Charitable Foundation.
The purpose of the Foundation is twofold.
First, it will bring under one umbrella all the charitable and socially responsible programs currently funded by RTO/ERO, such as Project Service to Others, the 25 Scholarships awarded annually to those pursuing careers in education, the $10,000 Charitable Donation, as well as donations made in the wake of natural disasters, Goodwill, and the Emergency Assistance Program.
The other purpose of the Foundation is to establish, maintain and support the RTO/ERO Endowed Chair of Geriatrics at the University of Toronto.
The RTO/ERO provincial office, in collaboration with the University of Toronto, will, in due course, provide information via Renaissance and other sources, and respond to queries from members/districts, in order to facilitate a greater understanding of, and engagement with, this major project.
The Project Service to Others Committee reviewed 35 applications and gave partial or full funding to 32 projects for a total value of $100,000.
District 39 (Peel) is pleased to announce that our submission for "Opportunities Mississauga for 21 Plus (OM21)" was successful in receiving $4000.
The presentation will be made at our Annual General Meeting on October 18, 2010.
The District Executive is accountable for overseeing the successful completion of the project.
An interim or final progress report must be filed with the Provincial Office before any new application of project funding will be considered.
In the last 11 years, 311 projects have been approved for a total of $831,377.
The Provincial Executive received 14 proposals from Districts to be considered for the RTO/ERO charitable donation for 2010.
This year, on August 28, 2010, at the RTO/ERO Annual Blue Jays baseball game, RTO/ERO will make the charitable donation of $10,000 to Pennies for Peace.
RTO/ERO awards up to 25 individual scholarships of $1000.
The Scholarship program is intended to assist applicants pursuing teaching from an accredited teacher training facility (leading to B.Ed. qualifications).
The deadline for applications is the close of business, on Monday August 9, 2010.
The applications are on the provincial website.
You, as an RTO/ERO member, may sponsor a child, grandchild, niece, nephew, grandniece, grandnephew, etc. (See the guidelines.)
A more detailed report of Senate News will be found in the summer edition of Renaissance.
I wish you all a Healthy, Happy and Relaxing Summer.
